Was a teacher of 'Voice' and 'Acting' at the National
School of Drama, New Delhi. Helped the faculty
in creating a methodology of training that included
both the traditional as well as modern techniques
of actor training. Translated Stanislavsky's 'An
Actor Prepares' into Hindi for the students. Held
a number of seminars to compare and show the similarity
between a Kathakali dancers training and that
described by Stanislavsky in 'An Actor Prepares'.
Workshopped with some of the finest theatre practioners
in India and abroad. Workshopped with Cicely Berry
[RSC, London], B.V. Karanth [Mysore], Naseeruddin
Shah, Sue Weston, Arianne Mnoushkin... |

[1995]
started 'Leela a Elahi', an experimental
theatre space in Old Delhi. Began to experiment,
produce and create new works of Kathakali. Of
these, the most successful was a production of
Shakespeare's Othello. This project helped bridge
the gap between audiences that knew Othello but
were unfamiliar with Kathakali. |

Started KhelKali, a form of dance
theatre that takes its inspiration from Kathakali,
but also frees itself from any limitations. This
form has allowed other artists to join into a
KhelKali performance, different kinds of percussionists,
photographers, painters, singers, dancers. It
has opened up a new space for improvisation and
new work to happen within the power and beauty
of a classical form like Kathakali. Through this
format it has also been possible to comment on
the contemporary political situation in India.
A lot of these KhelKali performances take place
in the mountain villages of Himachal Pradesh. |

and directed about a 100 productions in the English
language as well as Hindi. These include western
classics like Shakespeare, Shaw, Pinter and Stoppard,
as well as Indian plays like Tughlaq, Sanskar
ko Namaskar and Aaya Naya Savera. |

Played
the title part in 'In which Annie gives it those
Ones', a film written by Arundhati Roy and directed
by Pradip Krishen, winner of two national Awards
in 1989 for best screenplay and best feature film
in English. Acted in The Mandal Conspiracy [for
Italian TV], Electric Moon [for Channel 4], and
Saanjh, a film directed by Sabrina Dhawan, nominated
for an Oscar in the film student category and
winner of the California Palm Springs 'Best of
Festival' award. |
